When will election results be announced? The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has seven days from the 4 November 2026 local government elections, which means until Wednesday, 11 November. Results come in steadily after voting stations close, and in 2021 the final declaration came three days after main voting day.

When will election results be out in South Africa?

Results will start to appear after voting stations close and counting begins, but the final declaration can take days. The law sets a default voting day of 07:00 to 21:00, and anyone already in the queue at closing time may still vote. The IEC has not given a fixed date for the final announcement, so treat the dates below as a guide.

Date What happens
Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 November Special votes, including more than 600,000 home visits
Wednesday, 4 November Election day at more than 23,000 voting stations
From Wednesday night Counted results begin reaching the results system (timing varies)
Around Saturday, 7 November Our estimate only, if the IEC matches its 2021 pace
Wednesday, 11 November Seven-day legal deadline for declaring results

What does the law say about the seven days?

The IEC must declare the result within seven days unless a court extends the time. Section 64 of the Municipal Electoral Act of 2000 says that if the Commission cannot determine and declare a result within that period, it may ask the Electoral Court for an extension and must show good reason. In 2021, the IEC confirmed it had “7 days from election day” to announce results, and it finished well inside that window.

Where can I check election results in South Africa?

You can follow results on the IEC’s leaderboards, its mobile app and its website, elections.org.za. ITWeb reports that the National Results Operations Centre at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand is the central hub that distributes results to portals and TV stations, so news channels will also carry running totals.

Official figures come from the IEC. Be careful with screenshots and party claims shared on social media before a result has been captured and audited.

Can we trust the results system?

The IEC says the system has been tested and is ready. Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo declared it “ready and fit for purpose” after an independent audit of functional robustness and cyber security. Issues found were fixed, and five political parties reviewed the system in October, reporting no material findings. A new virtual results centre lets parties and other stakeholders see results and reports remotely.

How long did the 2021 election results take?

The 2021 results took about three days after main voting day. Voting took place on Monday, 1 November 2021, and then IEC chairperson Glen Mashinini announced the final results on Thursday, 4 November. More than 12 million people voted across 257 municipal councils. At least 66 councils were hung, meaning no party won an outright majority, so coalition talks followed.

This year’s election is larger on paper, with 29.2 million registered voters and 2,655,067 approved special votes, up 131% on 2021. That could add to the workload, and a hung result in a big metro may keep attention on the numbers for days after the declaration.

What should I do before voting?

Check your voting station first, because you may only vote where you are registered. WhatsApp “Hi” to 0600 88 0000, or SMS your ID number to 32810 (R1 per SMS).
