Key points

  • Americans vote on Tuesday, 3 November 2026 for all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and 36 governorships.
  • Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress.
  • The first polls close at about 01:00 South African time on Wednesday, 4 November.
  • The result could shape US policy on trade and on the Iran war, both of which affect South Africans.

US midterm elections are national votes held halfway through a president’s four-year term. On Tuesday, 3 November 2026, Americans choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 35 Senators and 36 state governors. President Donald Trump is not on the ballot, but the result decides whether Republicans keep control of Congress.

What are the midterm elections for?

The midterms decide who controls Congress, the branch that passes laws and holds a president to account. Republicans hold the Senate 53 to 47. Reports from October put the House at 218 Republicans to 214 Democrats, with two vacancies and one independent who sides with Republicans. Whoever reaches 218 House seats holds the majority.

Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats. Republicans need 50, because Vice President JD Vance breaks ties. Voters will also decide 145 statewide ballot measures on issues including abortion, voter ID and redistricting, according to Fox News.

What do the polls say?

National polls favour Democrats, but these are forecasts, not results. The RealClearPolling average reported by Al Jazeera on 1 November had Democrats on 51.5% and Republicans on 43.1%. Pollster Natalie Jackson said: “We can be fairly confident that Democrats will win the House majority, but the Senate picture is unclear.”

Fox News rates the Senate a toss-up. Races to watch include Texas, Ohio, Maine, Michigan, Georgia and Alaska. History offers one guide: an advisory note from Frans Cronje Private Clients says the party in the White House has lost ground in 90% of House midterms over the past 80 years.

What time are the midterm results in South Africa?

The first results and projections could arrive shortly after 01:00 SAST on Wednesday, 4 November. There is no single announcement time. Each state counts under its own rules, so close races may take days.

Polls close (SAST, Wednesday 4 November) States
01:00 Parts of Indiana and Kentucky
02:00 Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Vermont
02:30 North Carolina, Ohio, West Virginia
03:00 Pennsylvania, Maine, New Jersey, most of Texas and Michigan
04:00 New York, Arizona, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota
06:00 California, Washington state
08:00 Final polls in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands

What does it mean for South Africa?

A change in Congress could slow further US measures against South Africa, but it would not automatically reverse them. The clearest example is this week’s decision to remove South Africa from AGOA from 1 January 2027, which President Trump made under his own powers.

In a February 2026 note, Frans Cronje Private Clients said a Democratic Congress probably could not easily reverse policy, but could obstruct further trade or sanctions measures. The firm also warned that relying on Congress instead of engaging the White House directly could leave Pretoria exposed.

Could the midterms affect oil and petrol prices?

They might, because the timing of any new action in the Iran war may be linked to the vote. CBS News reports that Trump has repeatedly hinted he may resume attacks after the midterms. Any escalation would matter here because of the monthly petrol price. Fuel costs here follow the oil price, which has been moving sharply on news from the Strait of Hormuz.

South Africans vote in their own local government elections a day later, on Wednesday, 4 November, so both countries’ results will arrive in the same news cycle.

Frequently asked questions

Can the midterm elections remove a president?

No. President Donald Trump is not on the ballot, and the midterms do not remove him. They decide who controls Congress, which affects how easily a president can pass laws and how much oversight he faces.

How many Americans have already voted?

More than 51 million Americans had already voted ahead of election day, according to reports cited by Al Jazeera on 1 November 2026.

How much has been spent on the 2026 midterms?

A record $3.8 billion (about R63 billion) had been spent on political advertising as of 12 October 2026, according to AdImpact data reported at the time.

When is the final result known?

There is no fixed time. Close races, mail ballots, recounts and state counting rules can delay outcomes, and news organisations may project winners before official certification.
